About

Zachary Child, MD is a board certified orthopedic spine surgeon and musculoskeletal oncologist. He is skilled in addressing back pain and finding surgical and non-surgical options that help patients reach optimal spine health.

Dr. Child grew up in South Lake Tahoe. He attended medical school at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and residency at the University of New Mexico. For his postdoctoral training, Dr. Child completed fellowships in orthopedic and neurosurgery at Harborview Medical Center (University of Washington) as well as orthopedic oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School).

Most recently, Dr. Child has played an active role in the research concerning complex spine surgery and oncology. He taught courses in orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, and musculoskeletal oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and was on the adjunct faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle. He has presented his findings across the nation and both his research and illustrations have been published on multiple occasions.

Back pain and spinal cord injuries can lead to chronic pain and limited mobility. Dr. Child’s thorough list of spine specialties include:

  • chronic back pain
  • injury and complication prevention in spine care
  • orthopedic trauma and spinal cord injury care
  • spinal cord infections
  • complex adult deformities
  • artificial disc replacement and repair
  • musculoskeletal oncology (bone tumor surgeries)
  • Non-surgical, surgical, and minimally invasive surgical options are available.

Now we have returned home to raise our daughter, close to family and be a part of the community that we love. My practice is built around one absolute requirement; I treat every patient as I would my family. Despite my training I have maintained focus on patients, and am most concerned with the patient experience and outcomes being the best that they can be.

I've lived by one rule for surgery and one rule only; if I've indicated a patient for surgery, I would also perform that same surgery for my wife, my child, or my mother.
